IX Telemetry

IX Flow Telemetry is a generic industry term used for technology that allows measurement of network traffic between peers by a user. The IX Telemetry feature in Megaport allows you to see the peering rates of any IX connections your company has deployed.

You can use IX Telemetry to view and analyze your network traffic flow statistics, check whether a peer is using a lot of network traffic, and diagnose and troubleshoot any configuration or networking issues.

IX Telemetry data is collected every 5 minutes and is available for the last 30 days. The data is collected at the IX level, so it includes all traffic that flows through the IX connection, regardless of the specific peers involved.

IX Telemetry is presented as Per-port Service Metrics graphs or a Sankey traffic view. The Per-port Service Metrics graphs show the traffic flow between peers over time. The Sankey traffic view shows the traffic flow between peers in a more visual way, with the width of the lines representing the amount of traffic.

Viewing IX Telemetry

To view IX Telemetry in the Megaport Portal, choose Tools > IX Telemetry.

Using IX Telemetry

The IX Telemetry page displays data for all IX connections that your company has deployed. Select either Chart View or Sankey View.

Use the filters to view the data you want to see:

  • IX Service – Select the IX service for which you want to view telemetry.

  • Peers – For Sankey View only, select the top 5 peers by traffic, or select specific peers to view.

  • Date select – Select the date range for which you want to view telemetry data.

  • Flow type – Select BITS or PACKETS.

Using Chart view

The Chart view shows the traffic flow between peers over time. The graph shows the traffic flow for each peer, with the x-axis representing time and the y-axis representing the amount of traffic. You can hover over the graph to see the specific values for each peer at a given time.

There are different views for incoming traffic and outgoing traffic.
You can filter the information by peer, or you can select the top five peers by traffic to view the most significant traffic flows.
You can sort the information by Volume in or Volume out.

Using Sankey view

The Sankey view displays traffic flows between peers, with the width of each line representing the volume of traffic. Hover over a line to view the traffic volume for that peer.

Use the buttons to display incoming traffic, outgoing traffic, or both. You can also filter the data by peer or limit the view to the top five peers by traffic volume.

Accessing IX Telemetry through the API

Megaport also offers a public API that you can use to access the services available through IX Telemetry. You can use the GET IX Telemetry API to return telemetry details for a specified IX.
