# Organizing Services into Projects

> This help topic describes how to use projects to group and filter your services in the Megaport Portal.

This topic describes how to use projects to group and filter your services in the Megaport Portal.

Projects let you group related Megaport services, so you can find and manage them together. For example, you can filter the Services page to show only the services in one project.

A project is for organization only. Adding a service to a project, or removing it, does not change the service's billing, configuration, or provisioning.

## How projects work

* A service can belong to one project, or to no project. It cannot belong to more than one project at a time.
* You can add Ports, MCRs, MVEs, NAT Gateways, and IP Address blocks to a project.
* You cannot add connections, such as VXCs and IXs, to a project directly. A connection is shown in the project of the service to which it is attached.
* For a LAG, only the primary Port joins the project. The other Ports in the LAG are shown in the project of the primary Port.
* You cannot add or move inactive services to a project. Inactive services are services that have been decommissioned or canceled, or that failed to provision.
* Projects are shared across your company. All users in your company can see them.
* Your company can have up to 50 projects. Each project name must be unique within your company.
* A project name can be up to 100 characters, and a description can be up to 1,024 characters.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You need the Company Admin, Technical Admin, Technical Contact, or Finance role to create, rename, or delete projects, or to add, move, or remove services from projects.
>
> Users with the Financial Contact or Read Only role can view projects and filter services by project, but cannot make changes. These users cannot access the Manage Projects page or use the project options in the **More** menu. For more information, see [Managing User Roles](https://docs.megaport.com/portal-admin/user-management/roles.md).

You can also add a Port, MCR, MVE, NAT Gateway, or IP Address block to a project when you order it, using the **Project** field on the order page. For example, see [Creating a Port](https://docs.megaport.com/connections/creating-port.md).

## Creating a project

Create a project on the Manage Projects page, then add services to it. You can create up to 50 projects, and each project name must be unique within your company.

**To create a project**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), choose Services > Manage Projects.\
The Manage Projects page appears. It lists your company's projects and the number of services in each project. The count includes the connections on those services.

You can also open this page from the Services page. Click Extra Actions (Extra Actions), then select **Manage Projects**.

2. Click **Create Project**.

3. Specify these fields:
   * **Project name** -- Specify a name that helps you identify the project. The name must be unique within your company.
   * **Description** (optional) -- Specify a description of the project.

4. Click **Create**.

The project appears in the list on the Manage Projects page.

You can also create a project when you add a service to a project, move a service, or order a service. The **New Project** option is available on the Add to Project and Move to Project screens, and in the **Project** list on the order page.

## Adding services to a project

You can add multiple services to a project at once from the Manage Projects page, or add individual services from the Services page.

**To add services from the Manage Projects page**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), choose Services > Manage Projects.
2. Click **Edit Services** for the project.\
The Add Services and In This Project lists appear. The Add Services list shows the services that are not in a project yet. Services in another project are not listed. To move one of those services, see [Moving a service to a different project](#moving-a-service).
3. Select the check box for each service that you want to add.\
To find a service, type in the search field above the list. You can add up to 50 services at a time.
4. Click **Add Services**.\
The button shows the number of services that you selected.\
The services are moved to the In This Project list.

**To add a service from the Services page**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), go to the **Services** page.
2. In the **Actions** section for the service, click **More**, then select **Add to Project**.\
The Add to Project screen appears.
3. Select the project.\
Use the **Find** field to search for a project. To create a project, click **New Project**.
4. Click **Add to Project**.

**moving-a-service**

## Moving a service to a different project

You can move a service from one project to another. For example, you can move a service to a new project when a team takes over responsibility for it. A service can belong to only one project, so moving it removes it from its current project.

**To move a service to a different project**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), go to the **Services** page.

2. In the **Actions** section for the service, click **More**.\
The menu shows the project that the service is in.

3. Select **Move to Project**.\
The Move to Project screen appears. It shows the current project of the service.

4. Select the project to which you want to move the service.\
Use the **Find** field to search for a project. To create a project, click **New Project**.

5. Click **Move to Project**.

## Removing a service from a project

Removing a service from a project does not affect the service itself.

**To remove a service from a project**

* On the **Services** page, in the **Actions** section for the service, click **More**, then select **Remove from Project**.\
The Portal removes the service from the project immediately. There is no confirmation step.

You can also remove a service from the Manage Projects page. Click **Edit Services** for the project, then click **Remove** for the service in the In This Project list.

## Filtering services by project

On the Services page, use the **Project** filter to show only the services in one project. The filter applies to both the List and Diagram views. The **Project** filter appears only in the List view, so select the project before you switch to the Diagram view.

Select a project to show only the services in that project, and their connections. Select **No Project** to show only the services that are not in a project, or **All Projects** to show all services.

Each option shows the number of services it includes.

When a service is in a project, the project name is shown on the service in the Services list. Click the project name to open the services in that project on the Manage Projects page.

You can also filter by project on the Term Management page. For more information, see [Managing Contract Terms in Bulk](https://docs.megaport.com/finance/term-management.md).

## Renaming a project

You can change the name and description of a project at any time. Renaming a project does not change the services in it.

**To rename a project**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), choose Services > Manage Projects.
2. Click Rename Project (Rename Project) for the project.
3. Update the project name and, optionally, the project description.
4. Click **Save**.

## Deleting a project

Deleting a project does not delete its services. If the project contains services, you must move them to another project or leave them unassigned to any project. Deleting a project cannot be undone.

**To delete a project**

1. In the [Megaport Portal](https://portal.megaport.com), choose Services > Manage Projects.
2. Click **Delete Project** for the project.
3. If the project contains services, select a project from the **Move services to** drop-down list, or leave the default (No Project).
4. Click **Delete Project**.\
If the project contains services, the button shows the number of services that it moves instead, for example, **Move 6 services and delete**.
