# F5 BIG-IP Virtual Edition with Megaport Virtual Edge

> This help topic describes F5 BIG-IP Virtual Edition with Megaport MVE functionality.

F5 BIG-IP Virtual Edition (VE) on Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) delivers advanced application delivery and security services directly on Megaport's global private Software Defined Network (SDN). By integrating BIG-IP VE with MVE, you can deploy a virtual Application Delivery Controller (ADC) without physical hardware, eliminating shipping delays, rack space requirements, and infrastructure overhead.

Megaport provides the network underlay, while F5 BIG-IP VE handles application traffic management, workload security, network protection, and secure application access. Through the Megaport Portal, you can provision MVE instances and establish Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs) to cloud on-ramps, data centers, and other services available on the Megaport SDN.

## F5 BIG-IP Virtual Edition

F5 BIG-IP VE delivers the same core traffic management, optimization, and security capabilities as physical BIG-IP appliances deployed in on-premises environments.

Key capabilities include:

* **Load balancing and traffic management** -- BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) distributes application traffic across backend resources to improve performance, availability, and scalability.
* **Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) and DNS** -- BIG-IP DNS directs users to the optimal application endpoint based on health, performance, and proximity.
* **Web Application Firewall (WAF)** -- BIG-IP Advanced WAF protects applications and APIs from OWASP Top 10 threats, bot attacks, API abuse, and Layer 7 DDoS attacks.
* **SSL/TLS offloading** -- BIG-IP LTM offloads encryption processing from application servers and enables inspection and policy enforcement on encrypted traffic.
* **Zero Trust application access** -- BIG-IP Zero Trust Access enforces identity-based app access control with authentication and authorization policies.
* **Network firewall and DDoS protection** -- BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM) provides stateful firewalling and protection against network-layer DDoS attacks.
* **Programmatic traffic control** -- F5 iRules enable advanced, programmable traffic manipulation, routing, and security enforcement beyond standard configuration options.

## Performance and licensing

BIG-IP VE deployments on Megaport MVE support up to 10 Gbps of L4/L7 throughput, depending on the selected license tier, making them suitable for a wide range of high-performance workloads.

BIG-IP VE is licensed using a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. Purchase licenses separately through F5 or authorized F5 partners.
